AEMET have announced a ‘Orange’ alert for temperatures reaching over 38C over the weekend. The alert covers all of the Canary Islands, specifically in the South, East and West of Gran Canaria and Tenerife, West coast of La Palma and all of EL Hierro and La Gomera. There is a ‘Yellow’ alert in place for temperatures of over 35C on Sunday 11th August for Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and the North of Gran Canaria.

The Canarian Government has also issued an official alert status for the high temperatures and are preparing for the possibility of forest fires which typically accompany these weather conditions. There is currently a ban on any type of controlled forest fires including BBQ areas.

The Government has also advised to take precautions in these extreme weather conditions such as drinking plenty of water on a regular basis, leaving windows open at night and avoid sunbathing in direct sunlight.
