Maspalomas DunesWe have put together a brief list of the top five things to do whilst visiting Gran Canaria, you wont be disappointed…

1) Las Palmas
This culture-crammed capital has ‘cosmoplitan’ written all over it. Walk its mansion-lined streets and you cant move for boutiques and high street shops like mango and M&S, not to mention pavement cafes and tapas bars.

2) Hiking & Walking
If you need to walk off the tapas, the countryside gives you no end of options for the ultimate challenge, scale Pico de las Nieves the island’s highest mountain at 1,949 metres.

3) Maspalomas Dunes
Maspalomas is no ordinary beach. Walk East and you are in pure Lawrence of Arabia territory – almost 1,000 acres of wind-sculptured dunes await you. They’re great for finding your own quiet suntrap, but the’re even better for sliding down – some are ten metres high. And if that all sounds like a bit too much effort, join a camel safari and let Humphery the hard work.

4) Waterparks
Gran Canaria is home to a trio of waterparks. You’ll get the biggest kicks at Aqualand in Maspalomas. It’s the island’s biggest. You can shoot up – and down – a wall of water on the Boomerang, and see what it feels like to go down the plughole on the Tornado. Aqua Park in Puerto Rico and Ocean Park in Campo international offer plently of thrills, too.

5) Mundo Aborigen, Fataga
Kids won’t mind checking out this museum. For one thing it’s out in the open-air – so you wont find any dusty rooms. Plus, with its life-sized figures of the island’s native Guanche tribes, it’s like a mini Madame Tussaunds. Factor in a spot that overlooks Barranco de Fatage – Gran Canaria’s biggest gorge – and the dramatic views make this place a big hit with adults, too.
