Gran Canaria is a paradise for the water sports enthusiast, with surfing, bodyboarding, windsurfing, deep sea fishing, sailing and scuba diving (amongst others) available to visitors and residents, all year round, due to the pleasant climate. The water temparature varies between 18 degrees (in winter) and 22 degrees the rest of the year so it’ll be no surprise that water sports is one of the most important leisure activities on the island. In fact the island has developed a reputation as one of the best destinations in the world for windsurfing and its little surprise with over 200km of coastline.

Las Palmas is a large hub for sailing clubs, as is Puerto Rico, Puerto do Morgan and Pasito Blanco. Testimony to this is the fact that local clubs have produced olympic champions over the years.

Surfing, several locations but las Confital near Las Palmas often see big waves

Bodyboarding and surfing is best done on the north of the island, between Las Palmas and Galdar, at times the waves can reach 5m high. Unsurprisingly, Gran Canaria is nicknamed Europe’s Hawaii.

Water sports in Gran Canaria are suitable for the professional and beginner, there are many instruction centres and hire shops to supply you with all the kit you will need, available at most major coastal resports..
